Updates on an existing program, a new program and some conferences

I received a comment today that said I need to update my Blog more often. I know that is true so will do my best to do so. It’s been so long since I’ve written anything that there are too many possible things to discuss. I think I’ll pick a few and then continue to add topics over time.

Some Upromise Updates

I had the pleasure of participating in the 2009 Chat Bash online chat about rewards programs hosted by CompareRewards.com. I was there to help answer questions about Upromise where I have my day job. It was really interesting to chat with members and have the ability to answer questions about Upromise and how the program works. If you aren’t familiar with CompareRewards, this is a site that discusses the pros and cons of the many different cash-back programs available to consumers. It’s a great way to learn about the various programs out there if you have any questions. It’s also a great resource for updates on changes in the various programs.

Speaking of talking to members, I’m pleased to announce that there will be a special twEATup hosted by Upromise and Rewards Network in Boston on 11/12/09. Come join Upromise and Rewards Network for our first Tweetup at Vox Populi in Boston! Meet other Upromise members and employees to swap savings tips, eat great food and have fun and maybe even win a $50 gift certificate to Vox Populi. Cost: $10 at the door for a delicious array of appetizers. Vox Populi is a Upromise Dining restaurant so you can get 8% back for college savings. Upromise also announced a new partnership with Vesdia which will bring more in-store and catalog shopping opportunities to Upromise’s 11+ million members. This is a very interesting pairing given the history of these two companies. I was involved in helping make this deal happen so won’t pat myself on the back too much. But, I think it’s great that we were both able to overcome our differences and look at how we can benefit the members, the merchants and the companies themselves by working together. So far, so good.

Dunkin’ Donuts Perks Rewards

Dunkin’ Donuts launched a program in New England recently called Perks Rewards. I believe they have plans to roll this out in all their operating areas as well. This seems like a great program as it embodies many of the best ideas in loyalty and is very different than most programs out there. The basic idea of the program is to get people to acquire a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card, register the card with DD, then use the card at any location. DD can now track customer behavior and send a variety of targeted messages based on purchase behavior. They get the benefit of the float on any money loaded to the card though ultimately will have to deal with the breakage through escheatment to the states since the cards are registered and they know where the customers live.

From a customer perspective, there are some great rewards you can get including behind the scenes access at some great sporting events. In their latest promotion, members can win 2 tickets to a Boston Bruins game and an autographed hockey mask by the Bruins goalie or the second prize of an autographed jersey. In addition, DD has partnered with OverRide (another program worth highlighting in a future post) to offer discounts at local gas stations. Just spend $20 and you can earn a $0.05 per gallon discount for up to 20 gallons of gas. Not bad if you had planned to buy your coffee from DD anyway. In exchange for some data about you, you get some valuable rewards. Nothings free but this seems like a good value exchange to me.

Upcoming Conferences

This November, the folks behind the Loyalty Expo (Loyalty 360) were planning a conference in Chicago called Engagement Expo. The concept is a great one to help companies drive more engaged members/customers. Unfortunately the conference is being delayed until February. Once I have more information I’ll be sure to share it with you.

For anyone interested, there is a Cards & Payments Loyalty Conference, taking place December 2, 2009 at the New York Hilton, NYC. The agenda looks good and should provide a great foundation for companies considering how payment devices factor into their loyalty programs.

That’s all for now. If there are any topics in particular anyone would like to read about or discuss, drop me a note.
